Educational Shows for the Whole Family

Ā

Our Editor-in-Chief, Brooke Knight, is stopping by to share some of her favorite TV shows for the whole family. Check out her recommendations below!

As a busy parent, I understand the draw of turning on the television and giving my kids (and myself) a much-needed break. Before I became a parent, I was that person who said, ā€œMy kids will
never watch TV!ā€ Now, almost seven years into parenthood, I’ve really changed my thoughts on television.

TV can be a useful resource for parents, educators, and kids. It was through watching
Barney that I learned what different road signs meant and how to spell "STOP" and recognize a stop sign. While I try to be mindful of what my kids are watching, and for the duration, I have found TV time to be a useful tool in the parenting arsenal.

Ā

And with that, I wanted to share four educational shows I’ve turned to again and again for my own kids. These shows give them a chance to learn something fun, and I often learn a few things myself!

1. Planet Earth II

Season 1 of Planet Earth is great, but my kids are always requesting to watch season 2. We’ve learned so much about plants, animals, and the environment through David Attenborough’s calm narration.Ā

Stream it through a subscription on Prime, Hulu, and MAX

2. Weird But True

This is a favorite show for my kids, and they always walk away with so much new information! The hosts are young adults, and they do a terrific job keeping kids entertained while exploring cool and weird topics.

Stream it through a subscription on Disney+

3. A Real Bug’s Life

My boys can’t seem to get enough of this show, and I often find myself watching it with the kids. The camera shots are truly spectacular and follow bugs as they go about their
bizzzzy lives.Ā

Stream it through a subscription on Disney+

4. Epic AdventuresĀ and
Animals Up Close with Bertie Gregory

Bertie Gregory is, perhaps, my favorite nature documentarian. His shows are so relaxing, even when he’s swimming in freezing water or being nudged by a giant shark. His shows are ones I love watching with the kids when we need to unwind after a busy day.

Stream it through a subscription on Disney+
